The Mercedes-Benz W220 was a series of flagship sedans which constituted the Mercedes-Benz S-Class during the early to mid-2000s. Development for the W220 S-Class started in 1992,[3] with the final design, helmed by Steve Mattin being approved in June 1995 at 38 months ahead of production start and completed design freeze in March 1996, at 29 months before the start of production in August 1998.[4] The completed prototypes were presented in June 1998. The W220 started production in August 13, 1998, and the C215 CL-Classcoupés started production in 1999. The W220 was a replacement for the earlier W140 S-Class after the 1998 model year. Compared to its predecessor, the W220 had somewhat smaller exterior dimensions but offered more interior space, particularly in the long-wheelbase versions (although the trunk is smaller than on its W140 predecessor). Production of the W220 totalled 485,000 units, slightly more than the production totals from the W140. Production ended in 2006, when the W220 was replaced by the W221 S-Class and the C215 was replaced in 2006 by the C216 CL-Class.

In many European countries, the diesel S320 CDI version became the most popular model, making it the first S-Class in which a diesel engine achieved broad appeal. Other engine options were various gas/petrol V-6 engines, V-8, and V-12 engines. There were long and short wheelbase versions, performance and luxury enhancement options, and also four-wheel drive versions.

Styling[edit]
Mercedes-Benz F200 Imagination at the Mercedes-Benz Museum
Steve Mattin's design was the first sketch drawn in October 1992 and developed into 1:1 scale by late 1994. In June 1995, the Daimler-Benz AG board of management approved Mattin's final design at 38 months before production. By March 1996, W220 program engineers completed the design freeze, 29 months before production start in August 1998. The W220 exterior design (especially headlights) was previewed by the Mercedes-Benz F200 concept in late 1996. Being a Mercedes flagship vehicle worldwide, the S-Class largely popularized the theme. It demonstrated a significantly different stylistic mindset, with both exterior lines and an interior design that expressed elegance and modernity. This can be seen as a response to criticism on its W140 predecessor, which had a more boxy look.
Despite being smaller, the new car was roomier inside while the dashboard carried over the new styling details first seen in the first generation A-Class from the year before.
Usa Auto Radio
A facelifted version of the S-Class was designed in late 2000 and introduced in September 2002, offering a more aerodynamic front-end and redesigned taillights, though the exterior style remained largely unchanged from the previous W220 models. Although the facelift only made minor changes to the exterior, it addressed several of the issues in the COMAND system and other interior features. Exterior updates included a more upright grille angle, new transparent housing for the headlamps (replacing the earlier translucent versions), and restyled lower air intakes on the front bumper.
The S600 series has a 'V12' badge affixed to either side of the car, just forward of the front doors and back from the wheel wells.
The first W220 S-Class rolled off the assembly line on August 13, 1998.

Some models had options for Sport package, Designo, and/or 4Matic.
In the United States the, W220 was introduced for the 2000 model year, the W140 until 1999. The type was noted as being the leader in the U.S. car market for luxury cars, and early reviews were mostly positive but noted the amount of money that could be spent on options. At the time, the US was the second biggest buyer of S-Classes, after Germany.[21] In 1999, Mercedes-Benz sold 189,437 and hoped to exceed that the next year.[22]One automotive magazine spent several thousands on options for their review of the 2001 S-Class. After choosing an S500, they added Distronic (a smart cruise control system), Active Ventilated Seats, the 'Timeport' phone with a voice control system, and the sport package (AMG rims and trim). This increased the price from the mid US$70,000s to the $90,000s after delivery and taxes. Other US models available at this time were the S430, S500, S55 (AMG model), and S600 (the V12). A four-wheel drive system became an option for 2003 for the S430 and S500 along with mid-life upgrades that targeted a range of interior and exterior features.[23] In the last U.S. W220 model year a V-6 was offered as the S350.[19] Another special option was called the 'Designo', which matched special interior and exterior colors and materials.[21] An example of this is that one such model used Elm wood in the interior.[21] There were two designo additions offered, the Designo Espresso Edition and the Designo Silver Edition The twelve-cylinder S600 included interior upgrades, including an increased amount of leather over more interior surfaces.[24][23]
The W220 based S65 AMG was also offered in 2006 concurrently with the new W221. The S65 had a 604 hp, 738 lb-ft twin-turbo V-12 and other miscellaneous features inside and out. It retailed that year in the United States for about US$180,000.[25] The V-12 had a displacement of 6 liters, in a single overhead cam, 36-valve configuration, and was paired with two turbochargers.[26] The S65 had four oval tail-pipes and AMG alloy wheels.[27][25]

Specific versions[edit]
S600 Pullman version
One of the most popular versions was the Long-wheel base S500, with over 108,000 produced over the model run. On top of that, an additional over 13,000 all-wheel drive S500 version were made and over 21,000 short-wheel base S500 models. This works out to about 140,000 S500 of all versions across all model years out of 485,000 of all W220 models over its production run. The W220's peak sales year was 2000, with 88,000 sold worldwide, but both 1999 and 2001 were close with well over 80,000 sold. Two unique models that had small runs were a factory produced 160 inch wheelbase 'stretch limo' called a Pullman and a special security version called S-Guard.[27]
The Pullman version was a Mercedes-Benz engineered version of the S-Class of this period (circa 2001), that went beyond the after market 'stretch' to offer a host of advanced systems and enhanced comfort. One of those systems was the AMG Advanced Mobile Media System to support the concept of a mobile office from within the vehicle. Components of this system including 10.4 inch LCD monitors displaying data from a computer with mobile web access. The system could also support video display, both from a DVD player or tuner to pick up broadcast; with two screen, it could display both at the same time. An additional re-chargeable battery allowed the system to powered independently for a half-hour with the engine off.[29] The AMG developed media system could connect to the World Wide Web using HSCSD or GPRS at up to 43 kilobits per second.[30][29]
The AMG Advanced Mobile Media System debuted in 1999 on the Mercedes-Benz S 55 AMG, which was noted for featuring a six-channel digital audio system. The system debuted on S-Class with 2001 Pullman model. AMG signed a co-operation agreement with Daimler-Benz starting 1990, producing special models of MB vehicles and became further integrated in this period starting in 1991 with the foundation of Mercedes-AMG GmbH various changes driven especially by the success of AMG models in MB lines and expansions at Affalterbach, Germany.[31]
The S-Class Pullman was offered as the S500 (V8) or S600 (V12) and was jointly developed by Mercedes and AMG. The Pullman is 100 cm (39 in) longer than the regular S-Class, providing 70 cm (28 in) of space in the rear seat area. This also additional seating for up to seven-passengers, with two rear facing seats in between the front and back seats. In six-seat configuration the rear bench seat capable of three is replaced by two independent chairs. In addition to the AMG multi-media system, there is also a bar supporting the consumption of cooled beverages, small tables, and a barrier to the front of the vehicle that. Along with this barrier is an intercom from the rear seat to the driver area to support communication within the vehicle. Mechanically, the roof, exhaust, side-panels and chassis featured changes to support the additional length. A special feature for people working on the car, is that the side panels can be easily removed like doors.[30]
Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG[edit]
Mercedes-Benz S 55 AMG (US)
Mercedes-Benz S 55 AMG (Germany)
One model line of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in this period was the AMG version S55. The S55 had a number of modifications over the stock W220 S-Class, and the changes were oriented towards higher automotive performance and more dramatic styling features compared to the regular models. The model name derives from displacement of the engine, a special almost 5.5 litre V8.[32] The early model had a naturally aspirated version with 355 hp (265 kW; 360 PS), and starting in 2003, it switched to supercharged version with 493 hp (368 kW; 500 PS).[33][32]
The additional power-boost came for the later model S55 from pairing this engine with a supercharger. A supercharger is a forced induction system that compresses the air before in enters the engine, and uses air compressor powered by a belt connected to the engine.[34] The engine peak output on the S55 was 493 hp (368 kW; 500 PS) and 516 lb⋅ft (700 N⋅m) of torque. Other changes include enhanced brakes and wheels, with 14.2 inch brake discs at the front and 13 inch discs at the rear. The S55 was also equipped with Active Body Control.[32] The supercharged S55 models had the Kompressor (Mercedes-Benz) badge on the side. For more about AMG models with this engine see'55' 5.4 L V8 KOMPRESSOR.[32]

Mercedes-Benz S600[edit]
Mercedes-Benz S 600
The S600 was the main 12-cylinder engine model of the W220 body. The increased output of the engine enabled this W220 to keep up with a Ferrari 575M Maranello according to one automotive magazine of the era. The 2003 S600 could achieve 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.3 seconds and 100 mph (161 km/h) in 9.7 seconds. It was 1/10 second faster than the Ferrari in a quarter mile test, with the S600 achieving in 12.5 seconds at 115 mph (185 km/h). It could stop from 70 mph (110 km/h) in 164 feet with the OEM tires in that same testing. The 2003 model had a Sensotronic braking system and the suspension used the ABC system which combined an hydraulic system and springs. The 2003 model was fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport tires with a Y rating.[36] In the US, the 2001 S600 had a 5.8 liter V-12 making 362 hp (270 kW; 367 PS) at 5500 rpm and up to 391 lb⋅ft (530 N⋅m) of torque at 4100 rpm.[37] The 2003 model update had an updated 5.5 liter V-12 with twin turbochargers, producing 493 hp (368 kW; 500 PS) and 590 lb⋅ft (800 N⋅m) of torque.[38][36]
The S600 was also a model of the S-Class Pullman, an even longer wheelbase version that was 1 meter longer and supporting up to seven passengers and mobile office technology.
Features included on the S600 (US-spec):[35]
- Stitched leather and increased leather trim
- Leather Dashboard
- Leather Tray
- Leather Console
- Leather Doors
- Wood Shift Knob
- Wood and leather trim on steering wheel
- Alcantara Headliner
- Four seats with heat and power operated
- Four-Zone Climate Control
- Integrated cell phone (Digital) with integrated car voice control
- Parktronic
Some of these were also options on other models
Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG[edit]
Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG
The S65 was an AMG version of the S600, with a twin-turbocharged V12 producing 604 hp (450 kW; 612 PS).[39] The S65 AMG W220 could reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4s, 200 km/h in 13.1s, and clocked in at 12.0s in the 1/4 mile.[40] The S65 still used the 5G-Tronic 5-speed torque converter automatic transmission due to its powerful engine, as it could make over 700 lb⋅ft (950 N⋅m) of torque.[41] Pushing close to 5,000 lb (2,300 kg), the S65 may not have been sporty compared to lighter sport vehicles of the day, but it pushed the performance limits of a full-sized luxury sedan. With 604 hp (450 kW; 612 PS) and over 700 lb⋅ft (950 N⋅m) of torque available, it excelled at autobahn cruising. One reviewer[who?] noted that it excelled at being a gran turismo (grand tourer) and averaged about 17 miles per gallon despite its size and equally large power plant.[42]
The S65 was noted as a special value on the used car market, given that, despite requiring the maintenance of less expensive models, it could approach a ten-second 1/4 mile, yet it retained amenities such as heated leather seats and multi-passenger seating. A popular aftermarket tuning kit was an ECU upgrade from Renntech since increasing engine output required no mechanical upgrades to the car.[20]
The German spec S65 AMG can accelerate from 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and 0–200 km/h (124 mph) in 13.1 seconds.[43]
Features[edit]
As with each new S-Class, the W220 was technologically advanced at the time of its launch, bringing in new innovations[44] such as Airmatic air suspension, Active Ventilated Seats (which used miniature fans in the seats to move air through perforations), keyless entry and ignition, Distronic: the first worldwide radar-assisted Autonomous cruise control system, and a cylinder deactivation system called Active Cylinder Control for the S500 and S600 models, which improves fuel consumption and reduces emissions. All were pioneering innovations at the time of the W220's conception. There are standard features to all models, standard features to certain models, and finally optional features. Sometimes what is standard changes on a model year or country of sale.
4Maticall wheel drive was introduced to the North American S-Class for 2003, for the S430 and S500 as a US$2180 option. This full-time system splits engine power 40/60 front/rear, with electronic traction control adjusting that mix to the wheels (or wheel) with the best traction in slippery conditions.[45]
It was the first Mercedes with curtain airbags (previewed by the F200 concept in 1996).
Details on some of the safety, comfort, and technological features are as follows:
Safety[edit]
Despite a wide range of safety technology, and being marketed for its safety, one Canadian website said W220 S-Class had not actually been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or Euro NCAP, or at least the information was not available.[46] However, another website says that the W220 passed the legally prescribed EU front and side impact tests. Increased attention to side impacts was noted, and the car included a window air bag that inflates between the A and C pillars.[47]
Passive safety features include various frames and bulkheads made out of aluminum and/or high-strength steel. Also the front and rear ends include aluminum crash boxes can be replaced as separate units to reduce the cost of repairs. Despite its price German insurance companies put it in the lower bracket because it was easier to repair.[47]
- Pre-Safe, the integrated Mercedes-Benz collision avoidance and response system, debuted with the W220 S-Class facelift in late 2002.
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Brake Assist were standard features for difficult driving conditions and emergency maneuvers.
- The W220 S-Class added standard front and rear side curtain airbags. In total, the W220 features 8 airbags: 2 frontal (driver and passenger), 4 side airbags (one in each door) and 2 window-airbags.[48]
- LED brake lights were also standard issue on the W220. LED brake lights illuminate faster than conventional bulbs.

- Xenon headlamps (bi-xenons starting from late 2002 facelift. These provide HID xenon lighting for both low and high beams).
- Linguatronicvoice recognition system which can be used to control the audio system, navigation system, and a cellular telephone through voice commands.
The Linguatronic voice control was introduced as an option in 1996 on the W140 S-Class. At that time it was primarily for controlling the car phone, and could understand 30 words. The second generation of this system was introduced in 2000. On the W220 this second generation system could understand more words and control more systems, such as the radio. In 2000, it could understand 300 words and control certain features on the phone, radio, CD player, and other systems. The second generation system needed 20 times the memory of the first generation system (from about half megabyte to twenty megabytes). The algorithms used in the system were developed at Ulm, Germany where what was then called DaimlerChrysler Research and Technology center was located in addition to other groups within the company.[49] The system listens to the person's voice and records frequencies which are then analyzed by a computer and its software. The system looks for patterns called phonemes to understand what the person is saying, a process which it computes in milliseconds.[50][49]
What system the voice command can control can depend on the model year.[50] In 2000, it could control the car phone, the radio, and the CD player (if installed) but in 2002 the navigation system was also added to its domain.[50] An original goal of the Linguatronic system was to allow essentially hands-free control of interior systems, especially the car phone by using spoken words.[51] This means there is microphone (located in the W220 S-Class) that can listen to the person; one of the issues is hearing the person over background noises and echos. The Linguatronic system used digital pre-processing to support this task. The features is run from hardware in a separate box in the back of the car.[27]
Drivetrain technologies[edit]
The W220 featured a new pneumatic suspension system (Airmatic) with Adaptive Damping System (ADS) which adjusts the shock absorbers to difficult road conditions. Drivers can select a comfort or two sports suspension programmes as well as increased ride height (+25 mm) via switches on the dash. The increased ride height is automatically canceled after 5 minutes of 55 MPH driving or manually through driver's input. The hydraulic Active Body Control (ABC) system (premiere in 1999 on the Mercedes-Benz C215 coupe) is technically more advanced than Airmatic and keeps the car level even in fast corners, provides a comfort and sports setting. Also, just like Airmatic equipped vehicles, the ride height can be raised by using a button (2 settings, compared with Airmatic's single setting), increasing ground clearance for driving on difficult terrain such as roads with deep ruts or snow. Prior to September 2002, only higher end models (e.g. S600, ABC available only) lowered themselves automatically at higher speeds by 15 mm in order to achieve greater stability (lower center of gravity) as well as better fuel efficiency through a slightly improved aerodynamic drag coefficient. As of September 2002 all models, regardless of engine and drivetrain type (ABC or Airmatic) were able to do so as well. Furthermore, at highway speeds the suspension computer automatically engages sport mode (Airmatic - Sport mode 1 or 2 depending on the current speed), thus aiding safety by significantly reducing body roll in sharp turns.

The Designo Espresso edition had Elm wood trim, and the Designo Silver edition had Maple wood trim.[24] There were two Designo exterior paint options, designo Graphite and designo Mocha Black Metallic.[52] The Espresso edition featured the Mocha paint, napa leather, and elm wood.[35]
Integrated car phone systems[edit]
Phone systems offered during its model run include the Motorola Startac, carried over from W140 and offered in the first model year but replaced by the Mercedes-Benz/Motorola Timeport. Later, Mercedes-Benz offered the Motorola V60 as the car phone.[53]
The 'Timeport' phone with a voice control system was offered as an option on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.[23] The Timeport phone was similar to a Motorola Startac.[54] In 2000, Mercedes and telecommunications and electronics company Motorola announced they would offer the Timeport cell phone system on all models in the year 2001. The Timeport cell-phone was a jointly developed and became available on all of Mercedes 2001 models(including the 2001 W220 S-Class) The Timeport phone was integrated with S-Class systems, major features included Voice-control and automatic muteing of the radio when accepting an incoming call (or tape or CD player). Another feature was that the directory of numbers in the phone could be downloaded to the car, and shown on the in-car display. Even though the phone was integrated as a system with car, it was portable handset that could be removed from the car. The cell-phone had an electro-luminescent Organic display with multiple colors available.[22] The Mercedes-Benz Timeport phones were the only ones in the StarTac family to have the organic-luminescent display.[55] (see also OLED) Another set of phones that the S-Class used were the Nokia 6150, Nokia 6210, Nokia 6310, and Nokia 6310i.[56] These phones worked with S-Class equipped with D2B data communication system (another later system was the UHI).[56][22]
As the years passed, various ways to connect different phones or systems to the COMAND or interface with existing cradles came to market, of varying ability and expense there is the issues of handling a connection to the system and then the software needed interface, and this task is affected by the model year and equipment options of any particular S-Class. One of the major advancements in this period was Bluetooth, and many modern updates are oriented towards this wireless data connection technology.
One option is the use a 'puck' which plugs into the existing hardware, and engages the COMAND computer/software like an original device, but can talk to a modern device on the 'other side' typically via Bluetooth.[56] The advantage of using a puck in this style is it means the existing cradle and/or cabling has to be changed but still allows connecting with a variety of different devices, especially a wide-variety of 'smart-phones' that became popular in the decade after the W220.[56]
Engines[edit]
The W220 was available with more engine options than the W126 or W140. The range started with a smaller 2.8L 197 hp (147 kW) V6 motor. Very popular was the 3.2L 224 hp (167 kW) V6, which was superseded by an enlarged 3.7L 245 hp (183 kW) V6 in the S350. Despite their popularity, the 6-cylinder S-Class cars were not imported into countries such as the United States until model year 2006 with the S350 (short wheelbase), where Daimler was then testing the market demand for a V6 S-Class.[57][58]
The S430, the only United States market S-Class available with both a short wheelbase ('03-'06) as well as a long wheelbase, was that region's most popular model and powered by a 4.3L 279 hp (208 kW) V8 that avoided the federal government's Gas Guzzler Tax of $1000. The S500 was powered by a 5.0L 302 hp (225 kW) V8.[45][59]
The S55 AMG ('01-'02) was outfitted with a 5.4L 354 hp (264 kW) V8 motor while the later versions ('03-'06) sported the same motor, but supercharged to a rated 493 hp (368 kW). The S600 ('01-'02) was outfitted with a 5.8L 362 hp (270 kW) V12 engine while the later versions ('03-'06) sported a twin-turbocharged (or Bi-Turbo) 493 hp (368 kW) 5.5L V12 originally developed for Maybach 57 and 62. Both S55 AMG and S600 have same engine output but target different clientele: the former more sporty while the latter more luxurious.
For one month in 2001, AMG produced the S63 AMG, which was sold in very limited numbers. The S63 was powered by a 6.3L 444 hp (331 kW) V12. An undisclosed number of the cars were sold exclusively through AMG in European and Asian markets. In the succeeding W221 S-Class, the S63 AMG badge was reused for cars powered by the 6.2L V8 and later the 5.5L twin turbo V8.
S65 AMG was introduced in 2005 with new enlarged 6-litre V12 engine developed specifically for Maybach 57S and 62S (as to amortise the cost of engine development). The twin turbocharged 6-litre V12 had output of 612 hp (456 kW) and 738 ft⋅lbf (1,001 N⋅m) of torque. S65 AMG became the most powerful S-Class ever built with incremental power increase for W222 S65 AMG in 2017. Additionally, S65 AMG was world's most powerful five-passenger four-door sedan until Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat with 707 hp (527 kW) was introduced in 2014.
The S320 CDI was initially fitted with a 197 PS (145 kW) || 470 N⋅m (347 lb⋅ft) engine, which was upgraded in late 2002 to a 204 PS (150 kW) || 500 N⋅m (369 lb⋅ft) one. The S400 CDI had 250 hp (186 kW) at first, but got 260 hp (194 kW) in 2004. The type designation S400 CDI was changed in the W221 generation to S420.
W220 was the first generation of S-Class, where automatic transmissions were standard on all models. At first, all cars had 5-speed 5G-Tronic transmission; however, since 2003 (2004 in the United States), S430 and S500 were instead offered with the new 7-speed 7G-Tronic transmission.

Transmission[edit]
All model years used a 5-speed transmission until a 7-speed came out. In the U.S. market, the 7 speed was the standard transmission on S430 and S500 models in 2004, unless they had the all wheel drive (MB name: 4Matic) option. Also, the S600 and AMG models still used the 5 speed transmission. However, the next year MB the S430 4Matic also use the 7 speed transmission.[60] The transmission has W and S modes that can be selected.[61][60]

AIRmatic system & ABC & Suspension[edit]
Airmatic, or AIRmatic stands for Adaptive Intelligent Ride Control and was not just an air suspension but also electronic and software control system that actively adjust the level of dampening.[47] This allows, for example, the car to automatically lower itself down at high speeds and keep the car balanced despite loads inside the car.[47] The car can also be manually controlled to raise the car up if going for example over rough roads.[47]The standard W220's have a four-wheel air suspension called Airmatic by Mercedes-Benz, rather than the more common 'springs and shocks'. Some models had a hydraulic system called ABC, which was an optional upgrade (so almost any model may have ABC) but it was also a standard feature on certain models. For MB, ABC stands for Active Body Control.[60] Airmatic and ABC were different systems, the Airmatic used air, but ABC used fluid struts in a similar way.
The Airmatic main components are an air-pump, airlines going to each wheel, and four air-struts.[62] The air pump is located in the front diver side behind a splash guard near the wheel.[62] Mercedes-Benz has also improved and changed the Airmatic pump over the course of time.[62] The AIRMATIC struts are controlled by the N51 Air Suspension Control Unit (N51) and there is also a level sensor that tells the level.[63] Airmatic allows a W220 to be lowered or raised by about 2 cm, for example, it lowers at high speeds for a lower center of gravity.[63] The Airmatic system was supported by the ADS, active damping system.[35]
The lower control arm in the previous S-Class was switched to a spring link and torque strut.[47]
On the instrument cluster multi-function display, the AIRMATIC warning message says 'AIRMATIC', 'VISIT WORKSHOP!' with an graphic of a car with a little arrow pointing up when it may have issues.[63]
The ABC system on the 1998-2005 S-Class used hydropneumatic suspension struts [64] ABC was standard on the S55 and S600.[35]
The car had an electronic stability control program and automatic slip control.[35]
Certificates and reports[edit]
In 2005, the S-Class was the first vehicle to receive a TÜV Institute environmental certificate from the German Commission on Technical Compliance for environmentally friendly components.[65] The improved environmental efficiency of the W220 manufacture process was judged approvingly.
Edmunds gave the S-Class a 5 out of 5 reliability rating[66] and MSN Autos assign an expert rating of 9.0 out of 10.[67] By March 2011, Consumer Reports had changed its reliability ratings for the 2001 and 2002 S-Class as having improved to 'average'. Build quality was generally considered to be good. For instance, Forbes described the W220 S500 as 'built remarkably well.'[68] Early W220s were recalled for issues with the trunk spring and the hydraulic fuel line; there were no recalls for the 2005 or 2006 model years.
Recalls[edit]
In 2006, nearly 24,000 (95%) S-Class sold in China between late 1998 and early 2005 were recalled due to a fuel tank defect.[69] The recall was limited to the S-Class cars sold in China; S-Class models sold elsewhere were unaffected.
Examples of recalls in Australia include:[70]
- 2000, a recall for the heater blower overheating issue
- 2004, for the V12 with ABC hydraulic line
- 2004, for a Blower fuse overheating in certain hot conditions
- 2007, an ABC hydraulic line could leak near hot engine components
Some other issues were noted with sensors or other components being potentially being damaged by water and/or heat. The model is also called the V220 (as opposed to W220).[70]
Maintenance/design features[edit]
One Canadian car site noted that older W220's can offer impressive features for the cost, provided that owners continue to maintain the vehicle. They noted a few key issues on later models including the air suspension and interior electronics. They also noted that over its production run Mercedes-Benz fixed many issues and there is also considerable variation in models depending how they were equipped.[46]
Reed valve inside air/water duct: the Ventilation drain[edit]
One critical maintenance issue is the main ventilation drain (these are below the vents at the back of the hood/bonnet and below the windshield). If this drain becomes clogged such as from leaves or snow it can overflow, flooding the passenger compartment.[71] When it overflows in can short out wiring in the car.[71] There is an air and water vent on the right (passenger side) near the base of the windshield, under the hood, which among other features as a drain with a reed valve to allow water to drain out.[72]
This issue was the subject of a Class-action lawsuit in the U.S. State of California.[73]
The suit alleged that . ' alleging, among other things, that the reed valve in the air/water duct in 2001-2006 model year Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) and Mercedes-Benz CL-Class (W215) vehicles is susceptible to clogging by leaves, pine needles and other debris, which can cause water to accumulate in the air/water duct and to overflow into the passenger compartment, possibly resulting in damage to electrical and other components.'
In 2010, the United States Judge Howard Matz ruled on the settlement about this issue.[73]
The air/water duct is drained by a reed valve, which if clogged can cause water to overflow into the passenger compartment.[70] Other things that can cause water to enter an S-Class interior include the air conditioning condensation drain tubes [74]
The permanent solution to prevent water from flooding the interior is to simply to remove the reed valve in the cowling drain so the water can flow straight and through the drain.[75]
Performance[edit]
About top speeds: The top speed of most models was limited to no more than 156 mph if it could be achieved, some models such as the CDI were slower.[76] A stock German S65 AMG S-Class (W220 model) is reported as a 12-second quarter mile.[43] The vehicle can accelerate from 0 - 100 kph (62 mph) in 4.4 s and 0 - 200 kph (124 mph) in 13.1 seconds, for the German model.[43]
An aftermarket version like the 2001 model year Brabus S V12 boosted the output of V-12 to 450 hp (340 kW; 460 PS) at 5700 rpm and could do 0-60 mph (97 kph) in about 5.4 seconds.[77]
- 2004 S500[78]
- 0-60 mph 6.0 s to 6.2 s[76]

- 0-60 mph 7.0 seconds
Aftermarket and tuner[edit]
There were also aftermarket versions of the 1998-2006 S-Class (W220) by other companies, such as this one by the car tuner Brabus
The naturally aspirated V-8 was boosted by up to 30 hp, but the turbo and super-charged version was boosted 100-120 hp by reputable tuning companies.[79][who?] An additional 200 hp could be achieved with extensive modifications going as far as improved heat management and modifications to the intercooler for the M275 V-12 twin-turbo. Potential points of modification include intake, exhaust, fuel systems, transmissions, and the ECU.[79]
An example of an aftermarket version of the S-Class, was the 2001 Brabus S V12. This increased the displacement of the engine to 6.7 liters and the horsepower to 450. The changes also included interior luxury options like the BRABUS PC, enhanced leather trim options, and a 12-inch TFT (flat screen) display. The Brabus S V12 cost US$416,000 (416,000 DM) and needed any stock MB S600 for the conversion. The Brabus had a top speed of almost 190 mph and various other changes, including different tires and rims (on the front 50.8 x 24.1 cm / 20.0 x 9.5 with 245/35ZR-20, and on the rear 50.8 x 24.1 cm / 20.0 x 9.5 also with 245/35ZR-20).[77]

Kerb weight 1,540–2,000 kg (3,395–4,409 lb) Chronology Predecessor Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W211) Successor Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213) The W212 and S212 Mercedes-Benz E-Class series is the fourth-generation of the E-Class range of executive cars which was produced by Mercedes-Benz between 2009 and 2016 as the successor to the W211 E-Class. The body styles of the range are:- 4-door sedan/saloon (W212)
- 5-door estate/wagon (S212)
Coupé and convertible models of the E-Class of the same vintage are W204 C-Class derived and known as the C207 and A207, replacing the CLK-Class coupe and cabriolet. A high-performance E63 AMG version of the W212 and S212 were available as well since 2009. In 2013, a facelift was introduced for the E-Class range, featuring significant styling changes, fuel economy improvements and updated safety features. After being unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show to invited members of the press and put on public display at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show,[4] it was introduced in March 2009 for Europe and in July 2009 for North America in the sedan body style. In 2010, an estate body style became available to all markets, though the estate body style was available in Europe since August 2009. Global cumulative E-Class sales reached the milestone 550,000 vehicle mark in July 2011.[5] Production achieved the milestone 500,000 sedan unit mark in March 2012.[6]The W212 E-Class was succeeded by the W213 E-Class in 2016 for the 2017 model year.- 2Body styles

Development[edit]
Design work began in 2004 after the development program commenced in 2003, with the exterior design by Winifredo Camacho and interior design by Thomas Stopka being selected in 2005.[7] After refinements and engineering considerations being made, the final design specifications were frozen in 2006. Certain elements of the exterior styling are taken from the preceding W204 C-Class and W221 S-Class each designed in 2002 and 2003. The bulging rear wheel arches are meant to be reminiscent of the fender flares of historic 'Ponton' Mercedes models of the 1950s. The design of the W212 and C207 E-Class was previewed by the ConceptFASCINATION design study in September 2008.Body styles[edit]
Saloon[edit]
The W212 E-Class saloon was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. The saloon went on sale in Europe in March 2009 as a 2010 model year automobile.[8] The W212 E-Class has 3 trim levels of equipment and equipment levels: Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde.[9]The E-Class features several new safety technologies including driver drowsiness detection, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition. It also includes features that improve performance, efficiency, and comfort, such as 'Direct Control' adaptive suspension, active seats (which change shape to support the passengers in corners), and movable radiator louvers which improve the vehicle's aerodynamics. Standard Mercedes-Benz safety and convenience features, such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), airbags, and automatic climate control, are included as well.[10]Estate[edit]
The estate version (chassis code S212) was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show[11] and was released for sale in Europe on 5 August.[12] Early models include the four-cylinder-powered E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the V6-powered E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, and the V8-powered E 500.[13] US models began sales in June 2010 for the 2011 model year.[14]Coupé and convertible[edit]
The coupé (C207) was first shown at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, while the convertible (A207) was unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.[15][16] Both models replaced the previous C209/A209 CLK-Class models. The C207/A207 E-Class is based on the W204 C-Class platform, and are produced alongside each other in the Bremen plant.[17]- Saloon (short wheelbase) (W212)

Styling[edit]
The 2009 E-Class’ design was inspired by the new design language Mercedes adopted at that time for the C-Class, S-Class, and CLS-Class.[18] The design got a lot more angular and aggressive than its predecessors and Mercedes gave the rear haunch a bulge that they named the Ponton flare in honour of the Ponton cars from the fifties and early sixties.[19] Among the changes done to make the E-Class look sportier include taking design cues from a number of existing models, including the CLS-Class and the S-Class. The rising character line of the 2009 E-Class was inspired by the S-Class, as were the wheel-arch extensions, the door handles, and the enormous bumpers. Meanwhile, the CLS-Class inspiration comes in the form of the re-shaped headlights: from the round design of the past model to an edgier squarish teardrop design. Other changes done on the 2009 model are a wider-framed grille, new nasal air intakes, and an overall wedge-shaped profile.[18] The 2009 E-Class has a drag coefficient of 0.25 to improve aerodynamic efficiency.[20]Interior (pre-facelift)Mercedes gave the interior a subtle facelift, one that features a more spacious cockpit with height adjustable bucket front seats, remote power door locks, power mirrors, heated mirrors, 4 one-touch power windows, and remote window operation. There are also wood trims on the doors, dashboard, and center console, front and rear reading lights, a leather steering wheel, an electrochromatic inside rearview mirror, and front and rear floor mats. The entertainment aspect comes from the plethora of electronically-enhanced goodies like an AM/FM in-dash 6 CD/DVD, CD-controller with CD MP3 Playback stereo, Harman Kardon audio system a TeleAid telecommunications service, and Bluetooth wireless data link for hands-free phone capabilities.[18]W212 facelift (2013–2016)[edit]

The fourth generation E-Class (W212) facelift was unveiled to media in December 2012 ahead of its public debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, it was made available for sale in early/mid 2013 as the 2014 model year.[21][22] Compared to typically subtle Mercedes-Benz minor model updates, the changes to the W212 were relatively extensive.[23] With the sales the E-Class had lost to SUVs and crossovers in Europe and America more than compensated for by demand in emerging markets,[24] it received the 'most significant model revision' Mercedes-Benz had ever undertaken,[25] reported close to €1 billion into the development of the mid-cycle refresh. The amount of new features on the facelifted model is about the same that's expected from the release of an entirely new model.[26] The facelift brings significant styling changes, improved engines, more standard equipment and several extra hi-tech features.[27][28]Depending on the market, the 2014 E-Class is available in the following versions. The lineup starts with the E200 that has a turbocharged 2.0-liter producing 181 hp (135 kW) or 208 hp (155 kW) in the E250. The more frugal E200 CDI has a 4-cylinder, 2.1-liter turbodiesel unit with 134 hp (100 kW). The same engine powers the E220 CDI where it's tuned to output 168 hp (125 kW), while in the E250 CDI it churns 201 hp (150 kW). There are also BlueTec versions of the E250, E300 Hybrid and E350. The regular E350 gets a V6 3.5-liter engine generating 302 hp (225 kW), while the E400 Hybrid has the same V6 engine but with an electric motor developing an additional 27 hp (20 kW). The E550 makes use of a 4.7-liter turbo charged V8 engine developing 402 hp (300 kW).[27]Styling[edit]
The front is completely restyled, giving it a more aggressive look compared to the pre-facelift model in response to the newer BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. The twin headlamp design is replaced with a singular front light (marking the end of Mercedes's dual headlamps use), while the light elements within the headlamps help to retain the 'four-eyed' appearance. Low beam and daytime running lamps both come with partial LED as standard, while full LED technology is available as an option for the first time for the E-Class.[29] The hood with flowing lines and the front bumper, which is made more sharp with bigger air intakes, have also been completely redesigned.[30]The facelift can be ordered with two distinct design variants: Sport and Luxury, which features two different front-end designs for each line.[31] The Luxury version comes with the classic sedan grille with 3-louver look and star on the hood. The Sport version features the sports grille with integrated star, also a first time option, forming a visual link to the high performance sports car models.[32] Sport models receive a more confident front design, using the AMG styling package that features larger air intakes and a distinct aluminum trim line along the entire lower rim of the front bumper.[30]In the rear, the LED taillights is given horizontal design, while Sport models feature exposed dual exhaust pipes.[33] The doors and front fenders were re-shaped, eliminating the wheel arch bulge and replacing it with a more traditional character line in the sheet metal. The lower side crease line (which replaced the pre-facelift model's side chrome trim) extends from the rear door all the way to the front fender, hence all the side panels except for the rear quarter panel has also been restyled. The interior of the mid-cycle refresh had been minimally restyled. The car's interior cabin have been subtly revised, with the new 3-tube instrument cluster, trapezoidal head-unit display, air vents design and a new analogue clock in the center console between the two central vents, like the CLS-Class (W218).[30] A new feature is the two-part trim which stretches across the entire dashboard, which is available in a wood or aluminium look, irrespective of the equipment line.[33] There is also a redesigned centre console without a selector lever (sedans had already done away with the selector lever as part of the launch of the W212), as well as a new multi-function steering wheel with DIRECT SELECT lever and shift paddles in conjunction with the automatic transmission.[30] If the driver had shifted up or down manually, after a set period of time the transmission independently switches back to automatic mode which saves fuel.[33]Equipment[edit]
Three different suspension configurations can be ordered. The comfort biased setup uses the base DIRECT CONTROL suspension with selective damping system. The sporty DIRECT CONTROL suspension with selective damping system is lowered by 15mm. The AIRMATIC air suspension with electronically controlled damping. The Estate model gets air suspension with self leveling as default on the rear axle. All E-Class will be fitted with an electromechanical Direct-Steer system as standard.[33]For infotainment, the E-Class is equipped with the COMAND system featuring AM/FM/WB radio, indash DVD/CD player, in-dash memory card slot, and Bluetooth interface for hands-free calling. Standard equipment also includes a central controller with a 7-inch, high-resolution display and a color display in the instrument cluster. Optional features include: Rearview camera, COMAND navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, Harman/Kardon Logic 7 surround sound, power rear window sunshade, heated front seats, active ventilated front seats and garage-door opener and KEYLESS-GO.[33]The E-Class benefit from new safety kit derived from the 2014 S-Class, including the stereo multi-purpose camera which enables the car to detect oncoming or crossing traffic, pedestrians and traffic signs 50 metres away.[34]Full-LED headlamps with Intelligent Light System and Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS on the 2014 E-Class.The Intelligent Drive technology equips the 2014 E-Class with up to 11 new or enhanced driving assistance features. From the Attention Assist system (giving the driver greater control over sensitivity levels) and standard Collision Prevention Assist technology, to Driver Assistance and Lane Tracking option packages that containing items such as Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control with Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Brake Assist Plus, and Cross Traffic Assist, the 2014 E-Class is better equipped to keep its driver and occupants safe than the previous version of the car.[35]The Intelligent Light System with Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS uses radar and stereo cameras to detect oncoming cars and stays on high beam while blanking out a section of light around them. The same system also identifies pedestrians and flashes light specifically on them.[36]Other optional safety technologies includes PRE-SAFE Brake, PRE-SAFE PLUS, PRE-SAFE Impulse, Active Parking Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Traffic Sign Assist and a 360-degree camera.[33]Specifications[edit]

Euro NCAP[edit]
Euro NCAP test results Mercedes Benz E 220 CDI 'Avantgarde', LHD (2010)[38] Test Points % Overall: Adult occupant: 31 86% Child occupant: 38 77% Pedestrian: 21 59% Safety assist: 6 86% Crash-tested 2010 Mercedes-Benz E 350 done by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2010 E-Class earned five stars out of five for occupant protection, pedestrian protection and assistance systems in the Euro NCAP test. It came standard with a number of safety systems like Collision Prevention Assist, Attention Assist, Adaptive braking technology, Daytime Running Lamps and Rain-sensing windshield wipers. The E-Class also received two 'Euro NCAP Advanced' rewards for the optional PRE-SAFE and PRE-SAFE Brake safety system.[39]IIHS[edit]
The 2010 E-Class was the first E-Class to earn IIHS's reputable Top Safety Pick award.[40] Insurance Institute for Highway Safety score the E-Class Good overall in the moderate overlap front crash test, but did not pass the small front overlap. It also received Good overall in side-impact collisions, the roof strength and seat/head restraint evaluations.[41]The redesigned 2014 E-Class received IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ award, which also passed the small front overlap crash test.[42] Apart from the aforementioned test, the W212 facelift also scored the Good mark in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and seat/head restraint evaluations.[43]NHTSA[edit]
U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash testing of the 2014 US model year E-Class yielded a four-star driver and four-star passenger rating in the frontal-collision test (out of five stars). Side crash results were five out of five stars for both front and rear seats. The car scored five stars in rollover testing.[44]Reception[edit]
The E-Class image suffered a downturn in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Things improve with the facelifted W211 but the introduction of the W212 series took the E-Class's original reputation for solid build quality and refined elegance and established it once again.[45][5] It is also praised for having a differentiated design from the contemporary C-Class and S-Class models.[46][47] Although the mid-cycle refresh was overwhelmingly praised;[48][49] the design received mixed opinions as Mercedes decided to take a more streamlined direction with the redesign, replacing the twin headlamp design with a single lens design, which brought the E-Class design up to date with the ongoing F800 Style design language found on cars like the A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, S-Class, CLS-Class and M-Class.[33]Special models[edit]
E63 AMG (2010–2017)[edit]
Pre-facelift E63 AMG sedan (Europe)Pre-facelift E63 AMG wagon (Europe)The E 63 AMG sedan was unveiled at the 2009 New York International Auto Show.[50] Fallout 4 mods lovers labs. The new performance version of the E-Class is fitted with the same powertrain as the SL63 AMG, including AMG's 6.2-literV8 and the SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports automatic transmission with four driver-selectable modes including a fully manual mode. Similar to the C63 AMG, the new E63 is more extensively modified than before, with a new, wider front axle, heavily revised suspension, and more distinct body panels.[51]The optional AMG Performance Package includes lightweight, forged 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with 255/35R19 front and 285/30R19 rear tires, stiffer suspension, a limited-slip differential, a special three-spoke sport steering wheel, and a reprogramming of the electronic top speed limiter to 300 km/h (186 mph) from 250 km/h (155 mph). The 6.2 L V8 has 525 PS (386 kW; 518 hp) 465 lb⋅ft (630 N⋅m) and will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds.[citation needed]In 2011, the 6.2-litre V8 was replaced by a twin-turbo version of the 5.5-litre V8 available in the E500/E550; power remained the same as for the earlier, naturally aspirated 6.2-litre engine. There was also a 557 PS (410 kW; 549 hp) Performance Package version. In October 2013, the AMG S-model of the E63 was introduced; this version packs no less than 585 PS (430 kW; 577 hp) and replaces the earlier Performance Package model.[52] In the United States, the E63 station wagon is only available as an 'S-model', and all E63s sold in North America now receive the 4Matic system as standard. Meanwhile, power of the 'regular' E63 AMG increased to the same level as the previous Performance Package model. There is no Black Series variant for the E63.With a 518 hp (386 kW) engine, the E63 can achieve a top speed of around 200 mph (320 km/h) (electronic limiter off), and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.3 seconds.[53]Facelifted E63 AMG sedan (UK)Facelifted E63 AMG wagon (US)The styling has been altered for both aesthetic and practical purposes: AMG side skirts and rear apron give the E63 more aggressive styling, and the larger air apertures on the front of the car allow for more air intake to the naturally aspirated 6.2 litre V8. Another styling change on the E63 is the wider, flared front wheel arches which accommodate the AMG front axle with a 2.2-inch-wider (56 mm) track.[54]For 2012, Mercedes-Benz started offering a bi-turbo V8 version. It is the M157, 5.5L twin-turbo V8, that is rated at 518 hp (386 kW), which is mated to a 7-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission[55] Portland Speed Industries, a performance shop in Hillsboro, OR, have tested a 2012 E63 AMG biturbo on their Dynojet dynamometer and it produced 479 whp and 561 lb⋅ft (761 N⋅m) of torque.[56]In 2013, the facelifted E63 AMG was launched almost immediately after the facelifted standard E-Class. It has a more sporty, singular front air intakes, sideskirts, rear diffuser and black detailings in the side mirrors, front grille, wheels, and rear apron. Also for the first time it can also be had in 4Matic four-wheel drive system. It has the same M157 5.5 L (5,461 cc) engine, with increased power of up to 550 bhp to last-generation's 525 bhp. Mercedes still offered an optional AMG 'S' Performance Package, which adds 27 bhp in power for a total of 585 PS (577 bhp; 430 kW) at 5500 rpm and 800 N⋅m (590 lbf⋅ft) at 1750-5000 rpm[57] and delimits the car's top speed to 186 mph. With the optional AMG 'S' Performance Package, the car can do 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds; vehicles without the package takes an additional 0.1 seconds.[58]E-Guard[edit]

In addition to the GPS navigation system and general processing and control logic, COMAND includes components such as an address book, telephone, radio and in many cases a CD/DVD drive. It is connected to other (often separate) devices such as CD/DVD changers, sound system and surround sound amplifier, TV receiver and the optional Linguatronicvoice control system via an optical fibre network. The first generations of COMAND used the D2B optical network standard whereas later models are based on MOST.A key feature of all COMAND systems is to provide deep integration between the various functions such as multimedia, navigation and telephony and to also allow multiple presentation and control facilities. An example of functional integration is where other audio sources can be muted when a phone call comes in or when navigation guidance is being given. It is also the case that the main audio system, speakers and microphone are used for all these functions instead of being logically and functionally separate. With regard to multiple presentation and control facilities, COMAND based vehicles allow steering wheel controls to be used alongside the main COMAND buttons and controller and COMAND related status information and instructions can be displayed in the instrument cluster in addition to the main COMAND display. On vehicles with a factory fitted Mercedes-Benz rear seat entertainment system, this also provides integration with the COMAND system, allowing for instance the rear seat displays to show content from the COMAND TV receiver or to play out the rear DVD audio over the car's surround sound system. On newer S-Class and CL-Class models such as the W221, the integration between COMAND and other vehicle functions is even more complete, including access via COMAND to the HVAC system, seat controls, etc. On these cars, in contrast to most other Mercedes-Benz vehicles, COMAND is part of the standard specification rather than an optional extra.COMAND was introduced first exclusively on the flagship S-Class and CL-Class models. Later, it became available on other Mercedes cars too.- 1Model History
Model History[edit]
COMAND 2.5[edit]
An early model UK-spec (right hand drive) W220 S-Class, with the COMAND system screen and buttons on the center console.Somewhat confusingly, COMAND 2.5 (not to be confused with the much later COMAND-APS NTG2.5) actually refers to the first generation of COMAND systems, introduced on the W220. The '2.5' label seems to refer to the fact that the main COMAND unit for this first generation had a height of 2.5 DIN. This COMAND system had a cassette drive, a built-in CD drive for the navigation map discs, an FM/AM radio tuner, a 4-channel amplifier and external connectors to other systems. The European models used Tele Atlas map discs (CD). Towards the end of 1999, the system was upgraded to use the improved DX type navigation discs. COMAND 2.5 uses a D2B optical bus for connection to the external CD changer, the telephone system, the optional Bose surround sound system and the optional Linguatronic voice control system. The COMAND 2.5 unit was made by Bosch.COMAND 2.5 was an option on almost all models and denoted by Mercedes-Benz option code 352.COMAND 2.0/COMAND 2.0 MOPF[edit]
The same COMAND 2.5 technology (with DX navigation maps) was next incorporated in a somewhat different form factor known as COMAND 2.0 (with '2.0' referring to the fact that this modified unit had a 2 DIN height), but with the cassette drive removed. These units were introduced on the W210 E-Class as rectangular units, later also in a more rounded form on amongst others the W203 and R230 models. From S-Class model year 2003, COMAND 2.5 was replaced by a widescreen version of COMAND 2.0 known as COMAND 2.0 MOPF.Note that COMAND 2.5, COMAND 2.0 and COMAND 2.0 MOPF are collectively referred to as 'COMAND 2' systems (despite these being the first generation COMAND systems and, confusingly, despite the successor being known as COMAND-APS NTG1.COMAND-APS NTG1[edit]
This new generation of COMAND systems was introduced on the model year 2002 W211 E-class and is in fact a complete redesign. MOST replaces the D2B optical ring network. The Mercedes-Benz option code became 527 (although, confusingly, COMAND 2.0 MOPF was also given this option code). These new MOST based systems were given the name COMAND-APS to distinguish them from the older D2B systems. The NTG1 system further distinguished itself from earlier models by having DVD based navigation instead of the CD based COMAND 2. This allowed to carry a whole region (such as Europe) on a single disc. NTG1 systems were also able to play MP3 CDs/DVDs.COMAND-APS NTG2[edit]
The NTG2 evolution was a cheaper and more integrated version of COMAND-APS, having all core components in the single double DIN head unit instead of three separate components as had been the case with NTG1 (an audio gateway including the radio, amplifier, and MOST controller; a head unit with display; and a navigation processor) and thereby also simplifying the wiring. Adobe zii reddit download youtube. However, unlike NTG1 models, the NTG2 COMAND was unable to play MP3 discs. To use the navigation at the same time as listening to an audio disc requires the optional CD changer. This version of COMAND was used in various models such as the W203 C-Class and the W209 CLK and even the Vito/Viano. It was also fitted to the Smart Forfour.COMAND-APS NTG3/NTG3.5[edit]

The button with the * symbol on the left is a programmable 'favourite' button.A W221 S-Class showing the location of the COMMAND screen to the right of the speedometerIntended for the flagship W221 S-Class and the W216 CL-Class, COMAND NTG3 is a high-end system. Unlike for most other Mercedes-Benz cars, the S-Class and CL-Class from now on have COMAND as standard, allowing even better integration and for COMAND to operate even more vehicle functions. The navigation maps are stored on an internal hard disk instead of a DVD disc (although updates are installed from an update DVD). In addition to operating the audio, video, navigation and telecommunication systems, the NTG3 COMAND also controls a host of other features, such as the multi-contour and drive-dynamic seats, the HVAC system, the rear window shade, the vehicle locking, alarm and immobiliser, interior and exterior lighting functions, the optional ambient lighting feature, easy entry/exit settings, etc.The NTG3 system comes with a large, high resolution 8' TFT 16:9 widescreen colour COMAND display mounted higher and more directly into the driver's line of sight and with a separate, large rotary controller mounted on the centre console in between the front seats. This system was the first COMAND to support DAB radio on the MOST bus.NTG3 uses an in-dash DVD (and CD) changer and CompactFlash reader for MP3 music. A digital TV tuner and a harman/kardon Logic7 stereo sound system with 14 speakers and a 600W 13-channel DSP amplifier can be optionally installed and controlled via COMAND. Where a factory fitted rear seat entertainment package is installed, this can use the NTG3 digital TV tuner and the surround sound system for playing out its audio over the speakers instead of headphones. As with previous models, Linguatronic voice command and control is available as an option too.The main controller for NTG3 is a large rotary dial with haptic feedback, although there are also buttons for quick access to commonly used functions and even a 'favourite' button that can be assigned a function of choice. In addition, buttons on the steering wheel give access to various COMAND functions too and the large screen in the instrument cluster can display various COMAND related settings and information in addition to the main COMAND display. The model year 2009 W221 S-Class received an upgraded version, COMAND-APS 3.5 NTG. This includes improved Bluetooth support and split view (where the passenger watches a DVD while the driver sees other COMAND functions such as the navigation map on the same display). The new NTG3.5 system also features a new rights management provision to prevent the use of copied map update discs. This rights management function means it is not possible to upgrade NTG3 based vehicles to NTG3.5.COMAND-APS NTG4[edit]
The NTG4 system is a reduced cost version of NTG3 technology. It was first introduced when the W204 C-Class launched in 2007 and features a 5' screen, much smaller than the higher resolution, bigger 8' screen on the flagship W221. It is the first version of COMAND that supports the Mercedes Media Interface. Like NTG3, it stores maps on a hard disk and has a card reader for MP3 music. Download brainworx bx_boom mac. It is also built with a somewhat larger 6' screen for other models such as the W212 and W218. Amongst other implementation differences are the fact that in the W204 version the screen electrically folds in and out whereas in other incarnations it is fixed. The Mercedes SLS has COMAND NTG4 too.Unlike the NTG3 system, NTG4 did not support 7 character UK postcodes when first released (only 5 character postcodes), but some NTG4 units (e.g. those in the MY2010 W212 and up) have a firmware upgrade available from Mercedes dealers which does add 7 character UK postcodes.NTG4 is also used in Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (X204).COMAND-APS NTG2.5[edit]
Command APS in a 200C 2011 modelSomewhat confusingly, COMAND-APS NTG2.5 was introduced after NTG4, replacing COMAND in models previously fitted with NTG1 and NTG2 systems (apart from the W209 CLK as that model was replaced by the W207 E-Class coupe. The unit has a SD card reader in addition to the DVD drive. An optional DVD changer can replace the single drive. The Mercedes-Benz option code is 512 for the single drive unit and 527 for the unit with the optional DVD changer. Like NTG4 models, it supports the Media Interface. The unit also stores the navigation maps on an internal HDD which have some extra space for mp3 files.COMAND-APS NTG4.5[edit]
In late 2011, Mercedes starting fitting the new COMAND-APS NTG4.5 to its W204 cars for Model Year 2012, and then to other models such as the W212, W207 and R172 SLK. It thus became the latest generation of COMAND for its non-flagship cars (i.e. cars other than the S-Class and CL-Class). It is also referred to as COMAND Online as it can use the mobile broadband connection on the telephone to connect to Mercedes-Benz Internet based services. It allows the running of various downloadable apps (such as Facebook) in the COMAND system. It uses a 7' colour display and has a SD-Card slot. The resolution, which is quite good at the time, is 800*480.Initially, the graphics were brown and black, and this system became known as GEN1. The colour scheme of the display were then changed to Grey/Black/Red at the same time as the graphics in the instrument cluster changed and this is known as GEN2 and coincided with the MY2013 update. Initially different firmware was used in GEN1 and GEN2, but later on the firmware for GEN1 and GEN2 was merged into 1 firmware release and the colour scheme became a run-time configuration item.Again, Media Interface is supported and maps are stored on a hard disk and restricted, as with NTG3.5, by a PIN based rights management protection feature. Like NTG3/3.5 it also has a separate rotary controller (although smaller than for NTG3/3.5 based vehicles).

Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222) COMAND Online NTG5.0Comand 4.7 or 3rd generation of Comand NTG4.5 was installed in vehicles from June 2013 onwards, such as GLK350(2015). It now supports direct tethering of iPhone / iOS Devices / Android OS to support the internet function which was not previously possible with these devices. It also features internet radio plus slight changes to the route guidance. The differences to NTG4.5 are new Mecedes Apps; CPU upgrading; 80G to 100G SATA; better Navigator figure performance, which enable a more fluent system as a whole.Supported file formats are:- Audio

COMAND-APS NTG5.0[edit]
This is the latest in the Comand family and has been introduced in the 2013/2014 S class, 2014 GLA and C class. It includes Mercedes Online Radio which is broadcast from Europe 24/7. The maps zoom in/out more smoothly and are enriched with graphics and functions. The core of the system is an Intel Atom (CPU) processor.[1]There are three generations of NTG5, NTG5*1, NTG5*2 and NTG5.5. NTG5*1 has a keypad, whereas NTG5*2 / NTG5.5 does not. COMAND NTG5*1 has support for Apple Car Play and Android Auto (Early units did not have this support but it can be added). NTG5*2 is fitted in S, CL, C, GLC, AMG-GTS and the new generation Vito. NTG5*1 is fitted to facelift A, B, CLA, GLA, W207-E, W212-E, CLS, GLE and GLS vehicles. NTG5*5 was fitted to the new W213-E class and is replacing NTG5*2 as vehicles are face-lifted. such as the Mercedes W222 S class and W463 G Class. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto adoption in Mercedes Comand systems[edit]
Many Mercedes-Benz models supports CarPlay and Android Auto since 2014/2015, including A, B, CLA, CLS, E, GLA, GLE, GLS class. To activate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in your Mercedes-Benz you will need an activation tool.COMAND-APS NTG6.0(MBUX)[edit]
This comand is used in the new sprinter W907, the new A-class w177 (and new CLA and GLA) and the B-class. This COMAND features Mercedes voice assistant with 3D visuals in the instrument cluster and infotainment system such as the maps and animations. This COMAND typically features dual displays for the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. The MBUX system is powered by Nvidia Parker 128 Chipset. A departure from intel processors used in COMAND 5. MBUX also features 4G LTE capabilities in some markets.[2]References[edit]
